Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Myth is one of the influential elements in the structure and content of contemporary stories and the play of Zahak by Gholam Hossein Saedi is one of the works that has been created by being influenced by myths. In the present article, the intertextual relations of the work with the story of Zahak of Shahnameh have been studied according to transtextulaity theory of Genette.
METHODOLOGY: This research was conducted by descriptive-analytical method.
FINDINGS: based on the types of Paratextuality, intertextuality and Arcitextualitey of Genette ‘s view, the author"s influence on the story of Zahak of Shahnameh has been proven. In terms of Paratextuality, Zahak"s play has both an internal Paratextuality and an external Paratextuality relationship with the story of Zahak of Shahnameh. In this way, the title of the play and the names of the characters express the internal Paratextuality, and articles, interviews, and reviews written about Zahak"s play, which refers to its connection with the story of Zahak of Shahnameh, express its external Paratextuality. In terms of intertextual connection, implicit intertextuality has been used so that the author refers to some parts of the story of Shahnameh such as Jamshid"s class division, Zahak"s previous acquaintance with the cook (Iblis), Zahak"s decision to kill Shahrnaz and Arnavaz, Arnavaz"s popularity and sanctity of some numbers like three and a thousand which he mentioned in his play. The author of the play, by using some features and themes of epic and mythological texts - especially Shahnameh - such as the wisdom of enlightenment, magic, divination and heroism of women, has been able to establish a textual connection with them. The author of the play, by using some features and themes of epic and mythological texts - especially Shahnameh - such as the wisdom of enlightenment, magic, divination and heroism of women, has been able to establish an Arcitextualitey connection with them.
CONCLUSION: Saedi’s “Zahak” Script was created based on “Zahhak” Story of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. This script is capable of intertextual analysis. Saedi reproduced “Zahhak” myth by using intertextual relations, and extruded the heros of Shahnameh from ideal context based on their personal emotions. He defined these heros like contemporary charachters and presented a contemporary version of the mythes.
